Singer Castle on Dark Island, located on the St. Lawrence River, is a unique blend of American history and local folklore. It stands as the only remaining castle on the river to have been fully completed, furnished, and inhabited during the golden era of New York’s great builders and industrialists. While Calumet Castle and Castle Rest (Pullman) were also completed and occupied, Singer Castle holds the distinction of being preserved. The castle remained in the possession of its original owners, the Bourne family, from its construction in 1905 until the mid-1960s. Frederick Bourne, the fifth president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, lent the castle its name. During the Bourne family’s summers there, it was known as "The Towers," a name inspired by the architect Ernest Flagg, who designed the structure after reading Sir Walter Scott's novel Woodstock.
This Tour highlights the American Channel of the St. Lawrence River. These islands were developed during the last two decades of the 19th century and early 20th century by the very wealthy as their playground and retreat.
Traveling by private rail cars from NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, etc., these titans of industry, banking, real estate development and hotel management put the 1000 Islands and Alexandria Bay on the map. They came to fish, race their powerboats, play polo, golf and tennis, host and attend lavish parties and leave the big city life behind. There were so many people of power and prestige in the area during “the season” that the New York Times kept a correspondent in the area to report on their activities. So step back in time on this very unique tour.
Construction began on Boldt Castle in 1900 at the bidding of millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt as a tribute to his beloved wife Louise. Boldt Castle was designed as their summer dream home. A castle rivaling those of Europe, built on the St. Lawrence River, in the heart of the 1000 Islands. However it was not to be, Mrs. Boldt passed away suddenly just months before the completion of the castle. Mr. Boldt was inconsolable and immediately stopped all construction on Heart Island, leaving the property vacant for over seventy years…

Sightseer's Paradise
The Thousand Islands are a group of more than 1,800 islands in the St. Lawrence River, straddling the border of the U.S. and Canada. A fashionable retreat for the elite in the late 19th century, today the area is a hub for outdoor activities. It’s home to elaborate island mansions such as the German-style Boldt Castle on Heart Island, and Singer Castle on Dark Island, with its Gothic windows and secret passageways.
