Traveling by private rail cars from NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, etc., these titans of industry, banking, real estate development and hotel management put the 1000 Islands and Alexandria Bay on the map. They came to fish, race their powerboats, play polo, golf and tennis, host and attend lavish parties and leave the big city life behind. There were so many people of power and prestige in the area during “the season” that the New York Times kept a correspondent in the area to report on their activities. So step back in time on this very unique tour.

A castle rivaling those of Europe, built on the St. Lawrence River, in the heart of the 1000 Islands. However it was not to be, Mrs. Boldt passed away suddenly just months before the completion of the castle. Mr. Boldt was inconsolable and immediately stopped all construction on Heart Island, leaving the property vacant for over seventy years…

The Thousand Islands are a group of more than 1,800 islands in the St. Lawrence River, straddling the border of the U.S. and Canada. A fashionable retreat for the elite in the late 19th century, today the area is a hub for outdoor activities. It’s home to elaborate island mansions such as the German-style Boldt Castle on Heart Island, and Singer Castle on Dark Island, with its Gothic windows and secret passageways.
